The once humble CR-V has become one of the most popular small SUVs on the roads of the world today. Once, the CR-V was simply the larger cousin of the Civic and the now defunct (though greatly missed) CR-X. However, as with all things, time marches on and the designers at Honda have not kept the CR-V’s design the same. Actually, this SUV is nothing like it once was, either outside or inside and may now be the perfect option for those who want a capable SUV for getting around town, but don’t want the bulk of the Pilot.

What does the new CR-V have to offer owners? You’ll find plenty of changes, particularly if you haven’t looked at this fun little vehicle in a few years. The restyling that took place several years ago continues to place the CR-V in the front ranks of the current automobile crop in terms of style and panache. However, Honda continues to innovate and create new and unique elements about the SUV.

First, you’ll find that the CR-V offers up a 180-hp DOHC engine, with Honda’s i-VTEC system in place. You’ll also find that it’s rated for 28 mpg on the highway and 21 in the city, with a combined rating of 24 mpg total. Of course, drivers serious about getting the best fuel economy possible out of their vehicles will find better results, as the CR-V is quite capable of saving more fuel.

The transmission is a 5-speed automatic, but those familiar with the steering column-mounted shifter of old will be delighted with the new position. Taking a cue from the Element’s design, designers placed the gearshift on the central portion of the dash, putting it in easy reach, but freeing the steering column from needless clutter. You’ll also find that the powerful transmission offers plenty of torque for better performance.

For those with a taste for the luxurious, the SUV is now available with leather trimmed interior, as well as Honda’s HandsFreeLink (Bluetooth), and the Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System. For those more concerned about storage and convenience, the CR-V offers a 60/40 folding rear seat, a two-deck cargo shelf and one of the easiest tailgates in the industry to lift.

Consumers looking to purchase the 2010 model will find a bit more in the way of styling, as well. The front end has been redesigned, offering a bit more in the way of aerodynamics, while the 17-inch alloy wheels really set off the new design quite well. Another innovative addition only available with the 2010 model is the power folding side-view mirrors, which tuck neatly down to the body in case you need just a bit more room outside.

If you’re concerned about the environment, the CR-V has earned the ULEV badge form one of the most restrictive, demanding authorities in the world, the California Air Resources Board. That means drivers can relax in the fact that their vehicle has ultra low emissions, as well as the fuel saving capabilities demanded in today’s economy.
